How do employers find a skilled worker from overseas?

There are many ways that an employer may find a suitable person from overseas:

Direct advertising in target countries

Some employers know that particular countries have workers with a skill set that is similar to their Australian workforce and may advertise directly in those countries for workers. They could do this either themselves or in partnership with an international on-hire (recruitment) company.

Through the company's existing workforce

Australia, being a multicultural country, has a culturally diverse workforce which may assist employers to source workers from countries similar to their current workforce profile. In addition, a worker from a particular country e.g. South Africa or the United Kingdom, may have contact with former colleagues in their home country who may also be interested in migration and so be open to an employer's sponsorship.

Australia Needs Skills Expos

To assist employers to access the skills they need, DIAC offers employers the opportunity to participate in Australia Needs Skills recruitment expos. The purpose of the expos is to help employers fill job vacancies that they are not able to fill from the Australian labour market.

The expos provide the opportunity for Australian employers to:

  • Meet and interview skilled workers
  • Recruit overseas skilled workers quickly and cost effectively
  • Reduce skill shortages
  • Raise company profile.

Skill Matching Database (SMD)

The Skill Matching Database (SMD) helps match potential skilled migrants with skilled vacancies in Australia. The database contains the educational, employment and work history of many thousands of skilled migrants who are interested in living and working in Australia.

The SMD is available to employers through the internet and enables employers to conduct a search for individuals with the skills that they require. The database holds over 10,000 individual records which can be accessed by employers.

Should an employer locate a number of clients who appear to have a skill set similar to their requirements, employers are able to obtain the complete record of each person and make direct contact to explore possible employment.
