Retailers are warning that the economic downturn could lead to the loss of up to 50,000 jobs in the sector this year.

Australian National Retailers Association chief executive Margy Osmond says the retail sector is Australia's largest single employer, with more than 1.5 million jobs.

ABS labour force figures show 44,000 full-time jobs across all sectors were lost in December.
